Jay-Z and Kanye’s New Video, “No Church in the Wild”

The internet is ablaze with critique and discussion following the recently released music video by French director Romain Gavras for “No Church in the Wild,” the opening track from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s 2011 album, Watch the Throne. As the third song to be made into a music video off of the platinum album, the song deviates from the braggadocio and ego stroking that clouds some of Watch the Throne (and hip hop culture in general) in favor of gritty, visceral visuals.

From the lighting of the first Molotov, the video is turbulent and discomforting. What follows are slow motion shots of open warfare between riot police and disillusioned militant youth, an obvious allusion to the wave of discontent towards establishment that has spread from Tahrir to the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. The video pulls no punches; highlighting the swelling of protesters’ faces as they are doused in pepper spray, and the ferocity in which the mob swarms the police. Statues loom overheard; stoic yet emulative of the chaos bellow.

However, neither side is painted better than the other. We connect the rioters to our modern conceptions of Occupy and the current clashing in Greece and Canada, but nothing is explicitly stated. Rioters loot shops and destroy private property, while police isolate and beat them mercilessly. Neither side shows quarter nor does either side betray motive, making for an apolitical yet totally relevant commentary that conjures the questions of power, hierarchy, and moral accountability that make the track so powerful.

Whatever you take from it, and whichever side of the riot shield you stand on, Gavras set the bar high for hip hop music in terms of what a music video can really be with his incarnation of “No Church in the Wild.”

Cannabis Science Gets Set to Release "Phytiva"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Cannabis Science, Inc. (CBIS.OB), a pioneering U.S. biotech company developing pharmaceutical cannabis (marijuana) products, is pleased to provide insight on the upcoming release of its new over-the-counter skin and nutraceutical product line to be branded "Phytiva" through its newest venture Phytiva Pharmaceuticals Inc. The Company is working as fast as it can to make its cannabis-based formulations that target critical ailments more widely available through multiple regulatory body guidelines. This approach will allow the Company to release its formulations to multiple markets reaching the maximum amount of people in the shortest time frame across the nation and internationally. To support this cause Cannabis Science has been working with numerous patients who have been documenting their self-medicating treatment process using the cannabis-extracts.

The Company continues to receive a large number of inquiries about current and new product releases and operational updates on its projects in the works. The Company is in the process of updating its website to provide up-to-date timeline information on its projects, product lines, events, conferences and other important corporate and operational information for the public as released for the public.

FDA Initiatives

Cannabis Science is working very closely with its previously announced FDA clinical trials consultants to guide the Company through the formal FDA new product release regulatory guidelines. The main steps required to be completed are as follows:

1. Pre-IND meeting with the FDA

*** The Company is currently in this stage and is working close with its FDA advisory group towards requesting a pre-IND meeting date. The Company has identified its initial target indication as skin cancer and will present this case to the FDA at the pre-IND meeting.

2. Application filing for IND Number

Once the Company has presented its case at the pre-IND meeting with the FDA and makes any recommended adjustments to its case study, it will then submit its formal application to the FDA for the IND number application.

3. IND Number assignment

FDA will assign an IND number for the case study once the Company has completed a successful application process. The IND number assignment will give the Company the green light to begin its clinical trials.

4. Begin clinical trials

Once the Company has successfully completed the application process and receives its IND number from the FDA it can then begin formal clinical trials to prove the product viable for general market consumption or use.

5. Successful IND product release

Working within the FDA regulatory procedures is paramount for Cannabis Science. Once it receives full approvals from the FDA on each of its target indications, it will then release its products for patients in need of the treatments for their critical ailments nationwide.

Over-the-counter Nutraceutical Product Lines

This market opportunity for the Company and the people who are looking for Cannabis Science formulations is very large and spans the nation and beyond. The Company has identified several target products to release and is finalizing a few for immediate OTC market release. Our supporters recognize that these products will help finance the company as we move forward with the FDA process.

Cannabis Science is rapidly moving to commercialize Phytiva, our new over-the-counter skin and nutraceutical product line to be available through its newest venture Phytiva Pharmaceuticals Inc. Cannabis Science formulations for these new products are finalized and we are making decisions for mass manufacturing and nationwide distribution. With several products on the roster for the Phytiva product line, the Company has made public a few: a lip balm to improve the dryness of lips and promote healing, a sunscreen with dual purposes to block the sun, promote sunburn healing and relief, and a dry skin lotion that enhance skin care for those suffering with Eczema and Psoriasis, a fourth product is a facial and body moisturizer that contains compounds with anti-aging properties that promote healthy skin and appearance.

As we develop the initial products for the Phytiva Product line, Cannabis Science is working on lateral expansion as we negotiate to acquire new and effective products and treatment processes.

State Regulated Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

The Company target initiatives in states that have approved medical marijuana programs is based on the successful results being reported by patients self-medicating using Cannabis Science approved formulations through state licensed manufacturers and distributors. The Company is working to expand availability of our formulations across the nation on a state-by-state basis as states continue to approve medical cannabis treatments.

Currently, Cannabis Science has its cannabis-based high quality extract formulations available in Pueblo and Denver, Colorado, through licensing agreements. As well, the Company has signed a licensing deal with Apothecary Genetics in California to provide the same full circle operations required under State regulated medical cannabis laws to provide California State licensed medical cannabis patients its formulations.

The Company has been receiving outstanding feed back from the current patients using its formulations for Skin Cancer as documented on the www.cannabisscience.com website.

Cannabis Science President & CEO, Dr. Robert Melamede Ph.D. and the Science

In order for one to understand the unique health benefits provided by cannabis extracts, including their ability to kill numerous cancer cell types, one must examine the role of the endocannabinoids system in maintaining and promoting human health. The endocannabinoid system formally evolved with the appearance of vertebrates, with the development of receptors that specifically bind to the lipid derived endocannabinoids. Surprisingly, the endocannabinoid system is a global, multi-scaled, homeostatic regulator of all body systems. Thus, the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune, musculoskeletal, nervous, reproductive, and tegumentary systems are all kept in dynamic balance by the endocannabinoid system through its ability to regulate mass and energy flow (the munchies). All cells can only survive by extracting what they need from their environment in order to maintain their internal organization. Cannabinoids, including those derived from the plant (phytocannabinoids), those produced by our bodies (endocannabinoids), and those synthesized by man (synthetics) can very powerfully promote the death of cancer cells by disrupting their internal organization while minimizing the ability of the environment to support them. Thus, unlike conventional pharmaceuticals and anticancer agents that typically target a single pathway (the magic bullet approach), cannabinoids impact many aspects of cellular and organismic biochemistry to kill cancers. The chemical complexity of concentrated cannabis extracts holistically decreases the probability that a cancer cell can survive while at the same time promoting general health, as evidenced by the anti-aging and health promoting properties that arise from stimulating the endocannabinoids system.

About Cannabis Science, Inc.

Cannabis Science, Inc. is at the forefront of pharmaceutical grade medical marijuana research and development. The second formulations will address the needs of patients choosing to use concentrated cannabis extracts to treat their ailments. Eventually, all Americans will have access to a safe and effective FDA approved medicine regardless of which state they live in. To maintain that marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug with no medical value is scientifically absurd. Cannabis medicines, with no effective lethal dose, are far safer than aspirin, acetaminophen, and most other OTC drugs that kill thousands of Americans every year.

The Company works with world authorities on phytocannabinoid science targeting critical illnesses, and adheres to scientific methodologies to develop, produce and commercialize phytocannabinoid-based pharmaceutical products. In sum, we are dedicated to the creation of cannabis-based medicines, both with and without psychoactive properties, to treat disease and the symptoms of disease, as well as for general health maintenance.

Cheryl Shuman Signs Global “First Look” Strategic Alliance Contract with Rapid Fire Marketing

Shuman will Act as Company Spokesperson and to Conduct Product Placement, Marketing and Consulting Services

Rapid Fire Marketing (Pink Sheets: RFMK) announced today that Cheryl Shuman, C.E.O. of Green Asset International Inc. signed a global “first look” strategic alliance contract with Rapid Fire Marketing. Shuman will serve as media spokesperson and will conduct marketing, public relations, product placement, consulting services for Rapid Fire Marketing. The partnership gives RFMK first in line for all celebrity media product placement opportunities in film, television, music and lifestyle media.

Cheryl Shuman is best known for her recent work on the television show “Wilfred” on the FX network starring Elijah Wood and Jason Gann. Referred to as the “Martha Stewart of Marijuana” by international media, Shuman brings 25 years of experience working with media, celebrities, marketing and health care in Beverly Hills.

“Our partnership with RFMK creates a wonderful opportunity for entrepreneurs and smart investors to be on the ground floor of this exciting and groundbreaking industry.  There are great financial rewards coupled with a chance to be involved in a hot ticket business that is on the cutting edge of celebrity and pop culture,” said Green Asset CEO Cheryl Shuman.

The alliance will kick off with the focus on maximizing the health benefits of the new Vapor Inhaler’s CANNAcig. “My plan is to make this product a ‘star’ by introducing CANNAcig and its health benefits to my celebrity and media connections. By implementing an aggressive product placement campaign in all of the top films and television shows, I’m confident that we will quickly dominate the market in sales and media exposure,” states Shuman.

The medical marijuana business has a five-year market potential of $8.7 billion and sales in 2011 were reported at $1.3 billion according to the See Change Strategy market report. The right placement can be worth millions overnight. With vaporizing being the healthiest intake method, the alliance expects to dominate the vaporizer share of this market.

Shuman found her passion in the cannabis movement since 1996 working as an activist and legal cannabis patient. Since using cannabis therapy, she has survived cancer and injuries from two car crashes.

Shuman was the founder of Beverly Hills NORML, founding charter member of the NORML Women’s Alliance and served on the steering committee for Public Relations and Marketing on an International platform. Cheryl Shuman was also a founding member of the NCIA, National Cannabis Industry Association. Cheryl Shuman transformed her non-profit career into a thriving profitable media enterprise as the director of celebrity, media and public relations for KUSH Magazine.  Her company Green Asset International Inc. recently made headlines by establishing a private investment fund launched in April, whose purpose and design is to assist developing companies with capital access, management and marketing.

Many investment groups and businesses have shown serious interest in the great opportunities inclusive in this sector but have not done so yet, partially due to a lack of information. Cheryl Shuman will address this through a celebrity related media campaign including educational videos.  Experts and investors agree that this industry has a great deal of promise. The partnership of Cheryl Shuman and RFMK and the subsequent great response to it, is indicative of the evolvement of this industry and provides investors with the best opportunities.

‘The right relationship is everything. Working with Cheryl these past few weeks, it was evident immediately that it was a perfect fit in terms of values, integrity, and personality. The addition of Cheryl Shuman on our team elevates RFMK’s stature, adding prestige and thus creating a positive ‘halo’ around the company. The value of her ability to provide global celebrity and media exposure for our company and products are priceless,” said Tom Allinder, CEO of Rapid Fire Marketing.

Make a Difference with Eco Friendly Clothing

The textile industry is one of the largest negative contributors to industrial impact on the environment. Production energies, resource consumption, and logistical fuel consumption are enormous contributors to textile’s carbon footprint. On top of that, during the production process, streams of carcinogens, volatile organic compounds, and toxic dyes are released to the atmosphere. The industry as a whole must take some accountability in regards to environmentally friendly production processes, or there will never be a change for the better.

Taking a step to a greener lifestyle can start in your closet. There are eco friendly clothing options available for all styles and fabrics. From organic cotton that avoids pesticides and overwatering to vegan silk that only uses the material from abandoned silk worm casings (rather than removing it from them directly), eco friendly materials are indistinguishable from the less responsible options they represent.

The king of organic materials that are used to make eco friendly fashion is hemp. Hemp has versatility, and flourishes in just about any climate without any pesticides. This cuts back on logistical cost to transport fabrics, as hemp can be grown anywhere in the United States while mass produced cotton is usually flown in from far overseas. Hemp cloth can really take on any form (strong and durable to soft and silkier) depending on how it’s woven, and even is said to have an antibacterial effect when worn!

As active shoppers in an increasingly educated marketplace, it is important to make an ethically conscious purchase. Buying eco friendly clothing will not only decrease your environmental impact, it will expand a market of eco friendly options that is poised to overthrow harmful productions methods, with enough support. Check out our Kush Couture hip hop apparel store to view our eco friendly clothing options, made with hemp.

United States of America Made Out of Cast Iron Skillets

Have you ever wanted a cast iron skillet shaped just like your home state? What? You didn't know that was a possibility? Indeed it is, thanks to Alisa Toninato, an artist in Madison, Wisconsin. She has created the entire contiguous United States out of cast iron skillets!

These gorgeous skillets are fully functional works of art — pans you can really cook in, but also pieces you can hang on the wall.

The installation of the entire set of contiguous states in cast iron measures 9 feet 6 inches by 6 feet, and weighs 550 pounds!

The skillets are custom-made, and are priced accordingly. One of these will run you a cool $300 to $400, but hey, anything to show your love of your home state!

M.C.A. Hip Hop Culture Innovator

In honor of Adam Yauch, (MCA) we figured that it would be nice to take a retrospective look at one of the more ambitious and influential records in hip hop culture, the Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill (1986).

Listening through, you immediately get a sense of the immortality of the band’s sound. Their experimental hip hop takes you right back to a time when a simple turntable and an inspired MC could nail a track better than the teams of producers and auto tuning that are so popular today. Each band member’s voice is as distinct as the first time you heard “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” at a crowded house party.

What will stand out more today than on the release is the skill at which the music is mixed together by famed producer, Rick Rubin. In this album we see the beginnings of Rubin’s bare production style, preferring the instruments to punctuate and lift the artists rather than overpower them.

Also, the rock and roll influences that the Boys brought from their band’s humble beginnings as a hardcore punk band permeates the record. Samples from Led Zeppelin set the tone in several tracks, and did you know that the aggressive guitar riffs that drive “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” were recorded by Kerry King, the heavy metal behemoth behind Slayer’s violent sound?

This album represents the scope that hip hop culture can have, the ripeness of the time for experimentation, and what a few talented MCs can get done despite initial critical scorn. License to Ill, and the rest of their career, is the kind of stuff that made the Beastie Boys legends. R.I.P. MCA, you left a mark on hip hop that will never die.

Master Kush, meet Dr. McNinja

With the massive creative freedom the internet grants artists, truly original ideas finally have a place to garner the attention they deserve without having to convert to the mainstream. Independently published webcomics are a thriving community that support their own, and provide fans with awesome content in a multitude of different genres; including action, comedy, and romance.

Here at Kush Boys, we take the time to follow and report on some of our favorites in the vast net of webcomics, giving special recognition to the cream of the crop. Today we’re featuring a comic that demanded our attention from the first few pages, The Adventures of Dr. McNinja.

Dr. McNinja features a Ninja with a M.D. in Medicine, and ass kickery. His receptionist is a gorilla, he occasionally rides a velociraptor, and he trained his ninja talents with Batman…sort of. The comic is littered with action packed fight scenes, dry delivered humor, and a tad bit of chaos for an awesome combination that will keep you itching for the next update.

The humor and the content of the comic may seem a little ridiculous at first (Paul Bunyan’s disease for instance), but this toeing the line of absurdity is exactly where the comic finds it charm. The stories (though fantastical) never seem forced, and the humor rarely comes off as too cheesy or poorly written.

For an action packed ninja comedy, the likes of which Master Kush himself would be proud of, look no further. The Adventures of Dr. McNinja is a highly recommended internet gem that will quickly become a favorite.

Dubai reveals latest plan for underwater hotel

A long-awaited undersea hotel in Dubai looks finally set to be built, after an agreement to develop it was unveiled this week.

The Water Discus Hotel won’t be totally submerged but will be a disc-like structure with part of the building above water and the rest below the surface.

The 21 rooms will be submerged up to ten meters below the surface of the water, with huge windows offering a view out from the bed and an external ‘explorer’ robot which can be controlled from the room to allow guests to interact with marine life.

According to Deep Ocean Technology, a restaurant, spa and reception area would be hosted above the waterline, with guests descending below the surface in glass-walled tunnels to get to their rooms.

As might be expected, the hotel would offer plenty of services for divers, with a training pool and other water sports offerings set to be available.

The hotel will also include other amenities such as a spa, helipad, and an above ground terrace should guests feel a bit claustrophobic stuck inside The Discus!

With no specific planned opening date, observers will be watching closely whether this plan comes any further than previous attempts to build underwater hotels in Dubai, which have stalled or quietly disappeared as the country faced economic ruin.

Munch’s Scream sells for record $120 million

The only privately owned version of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” set a world record Wednesday when it sold for $119.9 million at Sotheby’s in New York.

Heated competition between seven bidders took the price to the highest for a work of art at auction in just 12 minutes, sparking applause.

The previous record was held by Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust which sold in 2010 for $106.5 million.

“The Scream” is one of four versions of a work whose nightmarish central figure and lurid, swirling colors symbolized the existential angst and despair of the modern age.

It was sold by Norwegian Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and supporter of the artist. He plans to establish a new museum in Norway.

The version of “The Scream” sold Wednesday was executed in 1895 and is the only one not held by Norwegian museums.

It also features a poem inscribed by Munch in which he explains his inspiration for the work, which depicts “the great scream in nature.”

“Scream’s” success means there are just three other works that have sold for more than $100 million.

One is the Picasso nude, another is Picasso’s “Boy with a Pipe” which sold for $104.1 million in 2004, and the fourth is Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man sculpture which fetched $104.3 million in 2010.
